Arizona AG Warns of Surging Crypto ATM Scams as Losses Top $177 Million
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes issued a statewide alert on cryptocurrency ATM fraud, revealing residents lost over $177 million to such schemes in 2024. The office launched a dedicated complaint portal for victims, reflecting a broader U.S. crackdown on kiosk-related scams. FBI data shows a 99% spike in complaints nationwide, totaling $246 million in losses this year.
Scammers typically impersonate banks or relatives via unsolicited calls, coercing victims to deposit cash into Arizona's 600+ crypto ATMs. Funds transferred to kiosks become virtually irrecoverable—Scottsdale police reported $5 million in losses alone. "Fraudsters exploit the irreversible nature of blockchain transactions," Mayes noted, urging caution when sending crypto to unknown parties.
